Welcome

You're in the right place.

It takes courage to look for help. Whatever brought you here, we're glad you came. Below are answers to the questions most people have before their first meeting.

What is DAA?

Drug Addicts Anonymous is a peer-led recovery fellowship. It was founded on the 12-step principles and is completely free — no dues, no fees, no membership cards. There is no organization telling you what to do or how to recover. It is simply people in recovery helping each other.

Anyone with a desire to stop using drugs or alcohol is welcome. You don't have to hit rock bottom. You don't have to be sober yet. You just have to want something different.

What happens at a meeting?

Most meetings begin with a reading, then people share their experiences — what it was like, what happened, and what life is like now. Some meetings focus on a specific step or piece of literature. Others are open discussions.

Meetings are anonymous and confidential. What is shared in the room stays in the room. You will not be judged, and you will not be pressured to do anything.

Do I have to talk?

No. You never have to speak at a meeting. Many people spend their first few meetings — or many meetings — just listening. That is completely okay.

If you'd prefer not to introduce yourself, you can simply pass. Nobody will push you. The only thing expected of you is to show up.

Is this religious?

DAA is spiritual, not religious. The 12 steps reference a “Higher Power” or “God as we understood Him,” but that means something different to every person.

Many members are religious. Many are not. Some think of a higher power as the group itself, or nature, or something they can't name. There is no doctrine, no creed, and no requirement to believe anything in particular. All are welcome.

How do I get started?

Find a meeting near you. Show up. Listen. That's it.

You don't need to call ahead or register. Most meetings are open to anyone who walks in the door. If you feel nervous, that's normal — almost everyone does the first time. The people in that room have been where you are.
